American rapper and hip-hop veteran Snoop Dogg has found himself in hot water following comments in which he suggested he did not want to be at the center of a debate over LGBTQ+ issues, specifically referencing a same-sex couple in Pixar’s film Lightyear.
In an appearance on the podcast It’s Giving with Sarah Fontenot last week, Snoop Dogg recounted taking his grandson to see the 2022 film, part of the Toy Story franchise. “Why, my grandso,n in the middle of the movie, like, ‘Papa Snoop, how does she have a baby with a woman? She is a woman,” the rapper said, according to CNN. “Oh s—, I didn’t come in for this s—. I just came to watch the g—— movie.”
Lightyear was released in June 2022 and follows the adventures of Buzz Lightyear as a “real” character, rather than a child’s toy as in the Toy Story films. It was met with controversy and pushback, notably over a same-sex couple featured in the movie. Snoop Dogg’s grandson’s questions reportedly made it impossible for him to even try to explain the material in the film. The rapper said he had no response to his grandson, telling him to “watch the movie.” “They just said she had a baby,” he continued. “They are both women. How does she have a baby? S—. The movie ain’t over with,” he later added. “I’m scared to go to the movies. Like y’all throwing me in the middle of s— that I don’t have an answer for.”
Snoop Dogg later added that he was especially “triggered” by the idea that children, when seeing a same-sex couple or characters asking questions, would put their parents in a spot of having to explain it to them in language they understand.
“I’ve already been watching the movie, and I’m half asleep. You’ve got to explain what that s— is all about,” the rapper said, adding that his grandson was a “wise child.”
The scene was later restored to Lightyear after removal, in which a brief moment has two female characters kissing. Disney had reversed course on the initial change after internal criticism and a call for more LGBTQ+ inclusion.
PinkNews reported that Snoop Dogg is set to perform at the Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final in November this year, but many social media users are calling for the rapper to be removed from the bill over his recent homophobic remarks. An AFL spokesman told PinkNews: “The artist was invited to perform at the Grand Final long before these recent comments were made,” Gillon McLachlan, chief executive officer of AFL, said. “The performance is still going ahead, and we wish the event well.” The AFL, which has put forward a number of inclusive policies in recent years, has not responded with any indication of removing Snoop from the lineup.
Conservatives had also previously targeted Disney over a separate children’s animated movie in which a same-sex kiss is featured, and which was not animated in the same style as Lightyear. Despite this pushback, many on the left have staunchly defended the decision, most notably Lightyear’s lead actor Chris Evans. “The real truth is those people are idiots,” Evans told Reuters Television during an interview over the controversy. “There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before. But those people die off like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward, and embrace the growth that makes us human.”
Lightyear grossed $226.8 million at the box office on a $200 million budget. It was not as successful as Disney or Pixar would have likely hoped for, despite the Toy Story franchise being a popular mainstay of animation over the past few decades.
