Gaal vs. The Mule: Foundation Season 3 Showdown
Apple TV+ released the official trailer for the highly anticipated season 3 of its sci-fi epic, Foundation, a multi-million dollar big-screen adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation trilogy. The trailer drops hints about a galaxy teetering on the edge, a looming crisis of astronomical proportions, and the arrival of one of Asimov’s most notorious and formidable villains: The Mule. The season is scheduled to premiere on July 11, 2025, and release weekly episodes every Wednesday until September 12.
The high-concept show that weaves elements from Asimov’s classic novels and has taken many creative liberties of its own to date has so far been structured in a way that features enormous time skips as key devices to propel the narrative forward. The 1st season concluded with a fast-forward of 138 years, and the 2nd season culminated with the Second Crisis, or a turning point in Asimov’s Foundation timeline where war is about to break out between the Foundation and the Empire. The Foundation itself at this point has weaponized religion as propaganda to expand its power base. At the same time, the existence of a secret colony of gifted psionic humans known as the “Mentalics” is revealed.
Fast-forward to season 3, where we find ourselves 152 years after the second season and seemingly entering a period in Asimov’s universe called the Third Crisis. The official synopsis from Apple TV+ reads, “The Foundation is a far more established power, the Cleonic Dynasty’s rule has begun to falter, and the two are starting to fight amongst themselves again. And then, a strange new power from outside the galaxy threatens everything both sides hold dear.” As a result, enemies of the Empire and the Foundation are being thrust together in an uneasy alliance against the common enemy: a warlord with unstoppable military might—and the power to make people fall in love with him.
In the trailer, Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) ominously intones, “Centuries ago, when we predicted the fall of the galaxy, the Foundation was created to save humanity. But the coming darkness was always the turning point.” Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell) takes over, warning, “We’re out of time.”
The antagonist in question is The Mule (played by Pilou Asbæk), who claims to have an uncanny power to move people to violence, emotion, or whatever reaction he wants. “I can turn enemies into allies. Hate into love,” he purrs. “It only takes a little nudge.” The trailer contains all the usual blockbuster set-pieces: car chases, chases through the desert, explosions, cities crumbling, and looks to be setting up the multi-faceted, galactic-spanning villain as the most potent threat yet to the war-torn future. In addition to Pace, Bilton, and Mann as the three clones Brother Day, Brother Dawn, and Brother Dusk, the cast is joined by series regulars Jared Harris as Hari Seldon, Lou Llobell as Gaal Dornick, and Laura Birn as the enigmatic humanoid robot Eto Demerzel.
Season 3 of Foundation also features a huge host of new characters, most notably including Alexander Siddig as Dr. Ebling Mis, a zealot for Hari Seldon and an autodidact psychohistorian; Troy Kotsur as Preem Palver, a planet of psychics, and leader of the aforementioned psychic planet; and Cherry Jones as Foundation ambassador Quent. Other cast members for season 3 include Brandon P. Bell as Han Pritcher; Synnøve Karlsen as Bayta Mallow; Cody Fern as Toran Mallow; Tómas Lemarquis as the outrageous Magnifico Giganticus; Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing as Song; and Leo Bill as Mayor Indbur.
Is the Future Predictable?
Foundation is ostensibly based on Asimov’s concept of “psychohistory,” a fictionalized hybrid of mathematics and sociology. It’s how Hari Seldon and his acolytes can predict where humanity will be, on average, centuries in the future. But as season 3 of Foundation seems to show, even that doctrine is up for grabs. The Mule is about to throw every prediction out of whack because his powers influence both human logic and human emotions, even the capacity for reason.
Visually, the trailer is incredibly promising. Cinematography, special effects, and production design in the series are of a piece with Apple’s multi-million dollar aesthetic that we’ve seen from so many of their recent shows and movies. Sweeping vistas of space, brightly-lit futuristic worlds, space battles, ground battles, whole cities collapsing on themselves, etc. The trailer ticks all the expected boxes, but what’s more impactful for viewers is the raw emotion on display. Foundation’s war of attrition has been raging on for so long that this time, it seems like things can’t get any worse, and the Empire and the Foundation can find no common ground. Can the Mule unite the galaxy against itself? Will psychohistory remain intact as The Mule’s mind-controlling forces are unleashed? And what kind of future is there where the galaxy itself doesn’t end up in the hands of an intergalactic dictator?
Season 3 is set to answer these questions and more with even more at stake, multi-layered characterization, and world-building on an epic scale. If past seasons focused on putting the pieces in place for Seldon’s plan to unfold, then this season appears to be all about the test of that plan against the impossible. The arrival of The Mule threatens not just the idea of galactic peace, but to humanity’s future being foreseeable.
