Invasion Season 3: everything we know so far

If you haven’t been watching Invasion, you are not alone. Apple TV+’s high-concept sci-fi show has had to share the spotlight this year with the release of another two very big-ticket shows on the service, in Silo and Foundation. The series has had a smaller but dedicated fanbase since its launch, but received mixed reviews from critics, with the first season especially criticized for its slow-burn pacing. Even diehard fans have at times spoken of their conflicted feelings towards the series, calling it a love/hate relationship.

The show has its high points, though: the cinematography has been consistently excellent, and the ideas are big and bold, even if the execution of them has not always lived up to the high concept behind it. Apple TV+ has just released the trailer for the upcoming third season of Invasion, which seems to suggest that the series is fully diving into its best self.

Invasion was developed by David Weil (Hunters) and Simon Kinberg, who is well known for his work on several of the X-Men films, as well as writing and producing The Martian, a film that was nominated for several Oscars. The premise offered a lot of interesting potential: an alien invasion of Earth from the perspective of ordinary people on the ground, in a variety of places all over the globe. Told in English, Japanese, and Pashto, Invasion seeks to ground its global science fiction story in human terms.

The first season of Invasion very much focused on the early stages of the extraterrestrial threat, and at times, the aliens themselves seemed to take a backseat to the interpersonal drama between the show’s characters. This was something that divided the audience of the show, as some viewers were surprised by the relative lack of action and focus on character, despite the intriguing set-up of the series. This sense of emotional drama and interpersonal relationships between the characters has been one of the show’s defining features since the beginning.

Season 1 ended with the inevitability of the full-blown alien invasion, and Season 2 very much reflected that as it ramped up the action and the stakes. The characters now have to grapple with life in a fully transformed world, and while there were occasional moments of hope, the situation was grimmer than ever. Humanity has been pushed to the edges of the world into confined safe zones, and even then, many people are not safe. As a result of this, the characters are often faced with impossible decisions. Season 2 did have more action and a quicker pace than the first, but it continued to feel very deliberate in its storytelling.

Season 3 Sets Characters On an Action-Packed Mission to the Alien Mothership

The third season of Invasion will pick up two years after the events of Season 2, with the threat having grown in dangerous new ways. In the official premise for the season, which will be its first fully spanning arc, the multiple perspectives will finally intersect and come together. The show’s major characters, who were spread out all over the world previously, will now be banded together in a desperate mission: to go inside the alien mothership, which seems to have full control of the situation on the ground. The unification of the major characters will represent a huge turning point for the show, as up until now it has had very little in the way of a unified narrative thread.

The aliens, too, have evolved, or more accurately, have been transformed into what the official description terms their “apex” form. As a result, they have started a rapid campaign of invasion on the planet in the form of deadly tendrils. The stakes for the series are now clear: the survivors on the planet will have to combine their abilities, knowledge, and tenacity to have any hope of protecting the human race. The third season will focus on the characters as they prepare for this mothership infiltration, and there will be new alliances and perhaps some old relationships that will not survive the weight of this burden.

Returning cast members in the third season include Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha Malik; Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuko Yamato; Shamier Anderson as Trevante Cole; India Brown as Jamila Hudson; Shane Zaza as the polarizing tech billionaire Nikhil Kapur; and Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans. The new addition to the main cast is Erika Alexander, who will be joining the show as a series regular in Season 3.

The major benefit of Season 3 to the storytelling of Invasion is that it offers the chance to close some of the long-running arcs that have been established in the series to date. But this third season will also be able to hit the high-stakes alien action that has been present but in the background for much of the series. Fans will finally get to see the alien threat fully in action. The series has to find a way to pay off these long arcs of storytelling and character development, but also embrace the bigger set pieces that were a part of the show’s original draw.

Invasion Season 3 premieres August 22, 2025, on Apple TV+. Whether or not the series can begin to make inroads into winning over the skeptics who have never given the series a chance remains to be seen, but there’s the sense in this trailer that Invasion has found its stride in Season 3 and knows what it needs to be to hit the sweet spot of dramatic, emotional, and sci-fi spectacle.
