Florence County, S.C., police have arrested nine teenagers in connection with the June 24 fatal shooting of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright. Officials say the fight that led to Wright’s death, which was partly caught on video by one of the suspects, apparently “originated over a girl.”
Wright was found dead on June 24 by deputies with the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, who arrived at a location on First Neck Road and found the teen suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The rural road where his body was found is about 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach. Police arrested 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway, who they say shot Wright multiple times after a “verbal altercation escalated.”
Florence County authorities later announced that Raper had been at least partly encouraged to carry out the murder by several other teenagers, who allegedly helped lure Wright to the road where Raper shot him. According to investigators, those other suspects knew Raper was present and armed, and that he had made threats against Wright.
Wright’s mother, Ashley Lindsey, spoke with Fox News Digital about the incident. “All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy,” she said. “I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”
In addition to Raper, a total of nine other people are in custody, at least one of them Wright’s girlfriend. Police arrested 17-year-old Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach, Wright’s girlfriend. Officials have charged her with accessory before the fact of murder, alleging she was responsible for bringing Raper to the scene of the murder and was fully aware that he was carrying a gun and that the two would likely get into a confrontation.
Five of those arrested have been charged as adults under South Carolina law, which gives prosecutors the discretion to try certain serious crimes by teens as adults. “The hand of one being the hand of all is part of South Carolina law as well, so that’s the basis of the charge for each of those individuals,” Florence County Sheriff’s Office Major Michael Nunn told WBTW-TV.
Nunn also stated that a total of at least seven suspects helped arrange for Raper to confront Wright at the scene of the shooting, knowing that Raper was present and prepared to act violently. “They were complicit in bringing the armed codefendant, Raper, to the incident location and knowing that there would be a confrontation,” he said. “They knew that Raper had presented a firearm to the victim and made threats to shoot him, according to the arrest warrants.”
In addition to the nine other people arrested in connection with Wright’s murder, three other Myrtle Beach-area teens have been charged with the crime of murder, alongside Raper. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office says those three suspects are 18-year-olds Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso, along with 17-year-old Sydney Kearns. According to Nunn, those suspects had a role significant enough to justify a direct charge of murder.
Sheriff T.J. Joye of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office explained to local reporters that the shooting was the result of a fight between two different young men over a woman, with the murder used as an effort to win her over. “They had issues with each other, and it was over a female,” he said. “The sad thing is, you’ve got a 16-year-old who lost his life. You’ve got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?”
Raper currently faces charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and he has been held without bond. Kendall has also been charged with murder, and she has also been held without bond. Belviso and Kearns both made a $20,000 surety bond last week and were released.
The Florence County Sheriff’s Office declined to comment further, citing the ongoing investigation, and district attorneys representing the suspects also declined to comment on the specifics of the case. However, those details are known to Wright’s family and friends, who are left to pick up the pieces.
Lindsey has posted about her son and her sense of grief and injustice over the situation on social media, where she has also found an outpouring of support from others. The murder is also another example for many concerned community members of the tragedy of adolescent arguments, bullying, and harassment sparking fights in which guns are used to kill or seriously injure victims.
