Ryan Coogler’s Ironheart to Explore Ambition and Moral Dilemmas

Ryan Coogler is on a roll. Fresh off a banner opening weekend for his most recent movie, Sinners, the director has another major hit in the works: Marvel’s upcoming limited series Ironheart, for which the studio recently debuted a new trailer in advance of the show’s June 2025 premiere.

A six-episode addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ironheart stars Dominique Thorne as the teen tech wunderkind Riri Williams, who is Tony Stark’s protégé in the comics and, in the MCU, will become a superhero in her own right. The project will be the last TV series to complete MCU Phase Five.

Ironheart was originally announced back in December 2020, with a planned release date of 2023. In the years since, however, Marvel Studios recalibrated its long-term content release schedule, deciding to produce less material per year, as part of a move to reduce market saturation and address concerns over viewer fatigue. The announcement pushed the Ironheart premiere back to this summer, with new footage shared at the 2024 D23 expo teasing a series “about a crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center.” Early character and concept art for Ironheart, combined with the preview clip, suggests the show’s vibe will be closer to, say, Loki or Moon Knight than most other MCU series, with a higher emphasis on grime and grounded drama.

As for Riri Williams, she made her MCU debut in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, when, as an MIT student, she created a vibranium locator that drew the attention of Namor and the blue-skin aquatic warriors of Talokan. Following a protracted battle with Wakanda, Riri built an iron suit and a connection to Shuri through their shared love of STEM to help the Wakandans repel their attackers. She is forced to abandon her suit with the Wakandans when Namor leaves, and, with Wakanda at peace, she returns to MIT.

A game of Iron and magic

Set shortly after the events of Wakanda Forever, the official synopsis of Ironheart teases a coming battle of the bionics: “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka ‘The Hood’ (Anthony Ramos).”

Joining Riri Williams in the cast are Lyric Ross as best friend Natalie Washington; Alden Ehrenreich as Joe McGillicuddy; Manny Montana as Cousin John; Matthew Elam as Xavier Washington; Anji White as Riri’s mom, Ronnie; and Shea Couleé as Slug. Jim Rash is also on board, reprising his role as the dean of MIT from 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. Sacha Baron Cohen has also signed on to appear in an undisclosed role.

The freshly released trailer gets right to the action, introducing audiences to Riri when she sneaks into the parking lot of an abandoned pizza parlor only to get trapped in an elevator rigged with poison gas. With two minutes before the toxins kill her, she must break into a safe box in the elevator to escape. The whole scenario is a test—or, as her captor puts it, an “interview”—orchestrated by The Hood. He tells her through the elevator’s intercom that she is not in any danger if she retrieves the gas mask from the safe, but her refusal to cooperate forces The Hood to improvise a new solution when he runs out of time. Riri’s last-minute ingenuity impresses The Hood, and he invites her to partner with him on an unspecified crime spree. “I wanna make something iconic,” Riri says to her new acquaintance, before she grudgingly accepts his offer, much to the chagrin of her friends, who rightly caution her that The Hood is a dangerous person to trust.

Will Riri take The Hood up on his offer, and, if so, how will she push the envelope in her quest to make it big? Both questions will be answered by the time the full series arrives on Disney+ next year.

The first three episodes of Ironheart are scheduled for a June 24, 2025, release on Disney+, with the final three dropping every week. Marvel has not yet confirmed a second season, though that is always a possibility.
