Strange New Worlds Season 3 Set for Summer Premiere

Fans of the live-action Star Trek: Strange New Worlds series have been anxiously waiting for a new season trailer ever since the first one was released in April. At last, Paramount+ has come through, sharing the official trailer ahead of Season 3‘s July 2025 premiere. The new trailer gives us our first look at what the U.S.S. Enterprise has been up to since last season’s cliffhanger finale and drops plenty of hints about the adventure to come.

Season 2‘s ending saw the Enterprise amid a brutal surprise attack by the Gorn, who had infiltrated a Federation colony world in force and taken multiple Enterprise crewmembers hostage, along with others. Starfleet Command ordered Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) to stand down and leave, but Pike had to make the executive decision whether to obey or disobey to try to save his crew. As might be expected of him, Pike decided to go with the second option and did what he could to protect the hostages and defeat the Gorn when Season 3 begins.

The few seconds shown in October at New York City Comic-Con were part of a bridge battle that followed right after the Season 2 finale, taking place in a similarly claustrophobic space with an overwhelming number of Gorn and similarly intense stakes, as it was one of the series’ trademark large-scale space battles to that point. The teaser trailer gives us more of that, but then shows the crew with a seemingly long-awaited chance at peace and a chance to regroup and make sense of their ordeal. Of course, nothing ever seems to be that simple for the Enterprise, and it’s not long before the crew is not only finally making a definitive end to this war, but also once again facing new threats and dangers, and unknown adventures and territory.

Production also hinted at a few extra storylines that will be in the season, mostly in its last few episodes. These include episodes that will see the crew dealing with such genres as faith, duty, romance, comedy, and even a little mystery, with Paramount+ touting the stories as “different in tone from anything else that has aired in a Trek series to date.”

Cast, Crew, and Characters

The main and recurring cast members are all returning for Season 3, and there are some notable new additions to the roster. Cillian O’Sullivan will appear as Dr. Roger Korby, who was originally played in Star Trek: The Original Series by Michael Strong. In the context of Strange New Worlds‘ established history, Korby is a renowned archaeologist with an academic focus in medical archaeology. He is also Chapel’s long-absent fiancé, who, in recent years, was also believed to be missing or dead. (Jess Bush) will almost certainly have her hands full with the complicated surprise reappearance of her old flame, while Kirk (Paul Wesley) and Spock (Ethan Peck) are likely to be dragged into it too. The Enterprise crew will also have the chance to work with guest stars Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt, both comedians and actors who will also be expected to bring some humor to the season.

For all the talk of new and varied genres being on display, the teaser trailer we had last April has a surprisingly strong hold on the more colorful and varied set of episodes to come in the new season. The upcoming season was promised to include more comedy, including episodes that are simply side stories within the Trek format, but the trailer also includes plenty of time in the stars, as the bridge crew of the Enterprise is shown casually hanging out with each other in camaraderie and good humor, or working through a tricky romantic subplot. The story promises plenty of heart, too, with a humorous ending in which a potentially disastrous, volatile science experiment finally goes off thanks to a specific sequence of… everything going wrong.

The trailer also hints at what Kirk’s full-time command will be like, but not for long, as he’s only seen in command for a split second before the session is over. Kirk’s role in the finale and what his involvement will be in this new war is still largely a mystery, but one thing is clear: his time will be limited, and his time in that chair will be a learning experience. “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with,” Pike says to his second-in-command in the scene.

The aforementioned finale sees James T. Kirk in the captain’s chair, at least temporarily. While it’s still not clear what Kirk’s role is in the season and how his Starfleet career and time as Enterprise captain will develop, what we can gather is that his time leading the ship will be formative, and in a way, its own story. “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with,” Pike tells his second-in-command.

The ending of the trailer shows a relatively rare comedy beat in the otherwise high-stakes and character-driven science fiction series, in which Oswalt’s Vulcan (played in his characteristic deadpan style) appears to be a bit confused by a version of a high five with a familiar punchline. It begins with Spock (Ethan Peck) apparently demonstrating the act, first pulling it off as the Vulcan asks, and then showing off his “too slow” “go down low” move, and of course asking, “Why would you do that?” in response to Spock’s classic “Because you are too slow” response.
