The ZR1X is the most potent and technologically advanced Corvette Chevrolet has ever produced. Revealed alongside the new ZR1, this all-wheel-drive hybrid supercar is meant to surpass even the most elite models from Ferrari, Porsche, and McLaren—with a far more reasonable price tag.

The ZR1X raises the standard more than just that. It resets it.

The Powertrain: A Twin-Turbo V8 Runs Against Electric Force

Fundamentally, the ZR1X employs the same 1,064-horsepower twin-turbocharged V8 derived from the ZR1. But adding a front-mounted electric motor brings it into hypercar land. Driven from a 1.9 kWh battery, that motor generates 145 lb-ft of torque and 186 horsepower. The system produces an amazing 1,250 horsepower (919 kW) taken all together.

Though small, the battery pack stores 26% more energy than the E-Ray battery pack. Apart from increasing electric motor output, that additional capacity helps to improve key performance.

This produces explosive acceleration. Chevrolet claims the ZR1X can run 0–60 mph in under two seconds. Immediately launch capability is guaranteed by all-wheel-drive traction from the electric front axle.

The ZR1X features first-for GM massive 16.5-inch carbon-ceramic rotors and 10-piston calipers to complement this speed. Pulling 1.9 Gs of deceleration, the ZR1X slowed from 180 to 120 mph with amazing control during testing.

Front axle disconnects at 160 mph help to lower drag at higher speeds. Though its hybrid complexity, the ZR1X reaches the same 233 mph (375km/h) top speed as the ZR1. Chevrolet actually tested this figure under extra weight to replicate the hybrid’s arrangement.

Software Improvement and Practical Application

Although the numbers are amazing, the engineering underlying the ZR1X is equally remarkable. Getting the program to control such high power levels proved one of the toughest tasks. With a totally reprogrammed control system, problems seen in the E-Ray—including reverse torque steer and regen-induced front motor cutouts—have been fixed.

Chief Engineer Josh Holder said that erratic sensor data resulted from tire deformation under heavy loads. The ZR1X program helps the car to simultaneously maintain 1 G of lateral and longitudinal acceleration—even with a projected weight of up to 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg) in convertible form.

Additionally providing track-specific driving modes like Endurance and Qualifying, the ZR1X gives drivers more control over how the engine runs. Designed for timed track laps or overtaking, the new Push to Pass capability momentarily releases the full 1,250 hp.

Even slowing down is more clever. Nowadays, regenerative braking is combined with rear friction braking to help to stabilize the vehicle during aggressive stops. And since the tires are already beyond their traction limits, torque is electronically limited in first and second gears actually protects the drivetrain without sacrificing acceleration.

Though it hasn’t been revealed, electric-only range is expected to match the E-Ray’s meager 3–5 miles (5–8 km) under low-speed, sub-45 mph driving.

Starting at $174,995, even a moderately priced ZR1X could be one of the most reasonably priced methods to experience hypercar performance.

When the ZR1X arrives, Chevrolet intends to introduce it in 2025 and it won’t just be another fast Corvette—it could be a game-changer.
